CentOS vs Debian vs Ubuntu: what are the differences?

Once you’ve decided which operating system you want to use on your virtual private server or dedicated server, you will have to decide which version you want to use. If you’re going for Linux, you’ll have to choose between different distributions (often shortened to distro). Hostio Solutions offers the following Linux distributions: CentOS, Debian, or Ubuntu.

All of these are excellent choices. However, when choosing it’s useful to know the key differences. Let’s have a quick look at the three.

The differences between CentOS, Debian, and Ubuntu

Debian

  • 1993
  • Version 10
  • Once every two years
  • Security support up until one year after the next stable release
  • It’s considered one of the most stable distributions
  • apg-get
  • Fairly small community
  • Quite complex. Usually recommended for experts

Ubuntu

  • 2004
  • Based on Debian architecture
  • Version 20.10
  • Every six months
  • From version 6.06, every fourth version is a long-term support (LTS) release, which is fully supported for five years. Non-LTS releases are supported for around nine months.
  • Good, but less stable than Debian and CentOS due to the shorter release cycles
  • apg-get, aptitude
  • Biggest and most active community. Official help, support, and tutorial pages.
  • Beginner-friendly

CentOs

  • 2004
  • Based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • CentOS 8
  • No pattern, but less frequent major releases compared to Debian and Ubuntu
  • Major versions receive support for 10 years from the date of release.
  • Only stable versions of CentOS are released, which is why new versions are released so infrequently
  • YUM
  • Good for enterprises. Difficult to find online support.
  • Good for enterprises that are already familiar with Linux

Should you use Debian, CentOS, or Ubuntu?

Debian, CentOS, and Ubuntu are all Linux, meaning that much of the core is the same. So, which operating system is best for you depends on your personal preference, your technical knowledge, and the size of your business.

If you’re a beginner, Ubuntu is probably the best, because it’s the easiest to install, has a very intuitive interface, and has a big online community. With the great number of tutorials and documentation available online, you’ll be able to learn how to use it and solve problems yourself.

Debian is better for people who already have experience with Linux and for those who want full control.

CentOS is recommended for enterprises that are mainly looking for a stable and secure operating system. If you’re working in the web hosting industry, it’s important to know that most web hosting control panels such as cPanel and DirectAdmin focus on RHEL derivatives like CentOS.

At Hostio Solutions, you can choose between Debian, CentOS, or Ubuntu.
